Kit/Equipment
Camera
Sony HD1000E – HD Shoulder-mounted camera. Runs on HDV tapes.
Grip
Konig tripod – double pan handles, fluid head, heavy duty.
Konig Dolly/’Skids’ – movement of the tripod is possible, assuming a flat, level floor is available with the dolly. Also gives extra height to the tripod in static situations.
Audio
On-camera stereo microphone with Rycote wind ‘softie’.
Hyper-cardioid ‘speech’ microphone – ideal for voiceovers at the edit suite
Single-sided headphone set
In-ear headphones
Lighting
I have a 9 Watt, 160 LED light with 3 filters (diffuser, 3200K (Orange), Pink) that is mounted onto the camera.
Power
The main camera battery can comfortably last a minimum of 6 hours, and most of the time will last longer than 8 hours.
For lighting purposes I have three sets of batteries (the minimum run time for these is an hour per set, and usually last much longer), plus a backup battery for either camera or light.
I can also bring a large, heavy-duty extension cable which provides 4 sockets, and alternatively I have 2 x 4 socket short and medium range extension leads.
Monitoring
On-camera LCD screen
Extra monitoring can be accommodated through a variety of connections, such as HDMI, Firewire, and Composite.
Bags/Cases
All kit is self-contained inside a Kata OMB-77 Bag.
I also use a small shoulder ‘run’ bag that contains the essentials I will need throughout a shoot – such as spare tapes, batteries, and lighting filters.
The kit above is what I own. I also have experience with a range of other kit, as follows:
- JVC GY-HD200E – Compact Shoulder-mounted HD camera
- Sony PD150/170 – Handheld SD camera
- Sony Z1 – Handheld HD camera
- Sony PMW-EX3 – Hybrid Shoulder-mounted/handheld HD camera
- Sony AWS-G500E (AnyCast)
